Buying fireworks? Read this first

Every year in our area fireworks start fires and cause serious injuries.

Many of the problems are the result of illegal fireworks, but legal types can be just as dangerous if not used properly.

Here are some tips for a safe and happy Fourth of July:

  • Keep a hose, with the water turned on, handy to douse fireworks or to put out fires. If you can't have a hose, at least keep a bucket of water handy.
  • NEVER try to relight a firework that doesn't go off or misfires. Douse it with water.
  • Ignite fireworks on paved surfaces, as far away from buildings and flammable vegetation as you can get. NEVER light fireworks inside a building or garage.
  • NEVER aim fireworks at other people, pets, cars or buildings.
  • Use only legal fireworks, and always use them as directed. Never attempt to alter or combine devices.

Remember that you can be held liable for damages caused by fireworks, and parents: You can be held liable for damages caused by your children.

Officials may seize illegal fireworks, and you could be subject to fines of up to $500 ... or even arrested. You might even be billed for the cost of extinguishing any fire you or your children cause.

The extra kick you might get from illegal fireworks just isn't worth it when you consider you get hurt, burn down your house, face stiff fines and expensive lawsuits.
